Written by Wang Chang Ling, this is one of 8 poems included in the Tang 300 Classics. Many of his poems described fictional battles at the Western warring borders of China. In this piece, he described a horseman crossing a stream and seeing the city of Lingtao in the distance. The first two sentences indirectly conveyed feelings of how the border was a harsh and cold environment (both literally and figuratively). The description of Lingtao at sunset against a sand plain further conveys his negativity towards war and a city that was all but fallen. The last two sentences mocked how people often praised and spoke of high spirited warriors, but the reality was that the region has been embroiled in endless war and left with nothing but fallen soldiers.
